Tetracycline hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of tetracycline, a broad-spectrum naphthylphenylalanine antibiotic. In bacteria, tetracycline blocks the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and bacterial cell growth. It is bacteriostatic at low concentrations and bactericidal at high concentrations.
